A Swimmers View!

By: Tina Thibodeaux

Why is the swim so short?  Only a half-mile, that’s not enough time to pull ahead.  Maybe there will be lots of waves to slow them down!

Who decided the bike had to be so long?  Does this part of the race ever end?  The wind is killing me.  I never knew you could actually feel like you were going backward on a bike!

What, now I have to run!  You’ve got to be kidding me.  We can’t just swim again?  3 miles!!!  How does anyone find this fun?

The above commentary is what actually ran through my head when I was getting ready for my first triathlon.  When I decided to do a triathlon, I knew I could do the swim (being a high school and collegiate swimmer) and anyone could bike 15-20 miles (just keep peddling!). But running 3 miles, now that was a challenge.  I was a believer that you only ran when you were being chased by a VERY BIG DOG!

Now after completing 10 years of racing triathlons I look back at that first race and realize I have come a long way.  I appreciate the skills and training it takes to complete a triathlon and of course I still have to work hard at running and look forward to the unusual triathlon with a longer swim and short run!

fun training definitions!

Cross Training - raining when you are very upset!

Carbo Load - A garbage truck full of bread and 6” pasta.

Expos - outlet malls for runners.

Injury - worse than the bubonic plaque: when In need of sympathy or a little attention, tell your running friends you have an injury (use words like “ripped  ilio-tibular ligament”, “Laceration plantar”, and “torn metatarsal”.) Then go out for a run. You will earn instant respect and admiration for running through your Injury!
