when to stay in bed!The ever present struggle every athlete faces at some point is when to cut back on a training session or just stay in bed and forget the session altogether. When should you listen to your body? There really is no one right answer, just good decision making that is based on experience. There are some very common signals, such as muscle soreness, fatigue, irritability, unwillingness to train, poor quality of sleep and a lack of motivation, that may indicate the body is not fully recovered. As you plan out this coming season, stay flexible and listen to your body. Sometimes you just have to get out there! It might be more of a confidence issue and you need to push through it. Replace a workout with something fun and new. For example, cutting out a bike-interval work out and replace it with a mountain bike ride or a spin class. Make it fun and get back on track! training definitions!
Brick Workout: Two workouts done back-to-back at moderate intensity with little rest in between! Base Building: Workouts done at an easy to moderate intensity with periods of recovery or rest as needed!

2) Any past accomplishments as a kid that you remember most? Nope. I had a pretty boring childhood. Growing up in the 60’s in a rural town of 900 people with no recreational facilities, there were not a whole lot of opportunities for young girls unless they wanted to be a cheerleader for the boys’ team. 3) Why did you start competing in triathlons and how long have you been racing? In May of 2004, I was 60 pounds overweight and started working out with a trainer (Jason at Home Body Fitness, who is now one of our sponsors). That summer, I ran into Jama at the local pool, she was training for a tri. She “planted the seed,” and completing a sprint-distance tri became my goal as I continued to lose weight and get in shape! I did Tri Andy’s Tri last year, and that’s my first and only so far. I’m registered for the San Jacinto Tri on April 22 and hope to do 2 or 3 other sprint or Olympic distance races this season. 4) What do you like most about triathlons and what part is your favorite? I most enjoy the friendship and support of other triathletes. I’m also looking forward to training hard enough that I will actually need to “carb-load”. My favorite part of the whole race is the FINISH! 5) What is your biggest achievement that you are most proud of? Losing (and keeping off for 1.5 years) 60 pounds, being physically, mentally, and spiritually in the best shape of my life at 45, and learning how to fix a flat on my bike (thanks to Ryan at Bicycles ETC-I know that was a challenge) 6) What is your 2006 Goal? I’m not a very competitive person, but I want to do 3-4 races and finish them all, hopefully in the top half of my age group. 7) What would you like others to help you with this triathlon season? Better swimming, have more fun, and become a better runner. 8) What is your favorite food and your favorite junk food? Chocolate and most carbs; not the good ones, unfortunately that will always be a battle! Home made German chocolate cake with lots of frosting, or homemade chocolate chip cookie dough. After eating so “clean” most of the time for the past 2 years, I actually get sick when I eat too much junk, but I still love it! Kim-I don’t think I like this question, now I have an urge to mix up some cookies!” (Sorry about that Diane. I will make it up to you!) 9) Final quote! I got into this sport at one of the lowest points in my personal life, and the people I’ve met and friendships we’ve formed have been a true blessing in my life.
