3rd Quarter

(July – September, 2007)

During these past three months, KTC has participated in a total of 8 triathlons or more!  We have had members race all over Texas and into Louisiana.  We even had two members race Halfmax national qualifier with one member qualifying for the World’s!

KTC has gained numerous points in the club competition and has grown to 99 club members!  We have also participated in some great guest lectures as well as volunteering at a Kiwanis Kids Triathlon.

Below you will find a brief summary of some of the races we have competed in this quarter as well as some of the guest lectures we had.

Next quarter we have Try Andy's & Ironstar and the end of the year banquet November 17thI am excited about how the club has grown these past few months and how much fun I have been having watching everyone compete and improve.  Keep up the great work and let’s end this season with a BANG!                                                                                                 -TinaThibodeaux, club president

On the social side, KTC participated in guest lectures on resistance training by Mark Hovenkamp, Foam Roller exercises and stretches by Jesse Coleman, bike maintenance by Mark Crosno, swimming drills/techniques by Kim Kelley and Tina Thibodeaux and a running/nutrition clinic at Luke’s Locker.

Small Texan - 7/29/2007

This year, KTC had a total of 9 racers attempting the challenging hills and blistering heat of Boerne.  Luckily, the racers did not have to face the blistering heat, but had to overcome a new challenge - FOG.  Although the fog made the swim very interesting it did allow for cooler temps and personal bests for all KTC members.

We collected a total of 32.5 points with Kevin Kirk and the women all taking home hardware.

Julie Mosier won OVERALL FEMALE for the second year in a row!

Eastside 8/12/2007

Another great race for KTC with 5 members racing this well organized race.  Members helped KTC earn another 9.5 points for the SMW regional club race.  This is an excellent sprint distance for all racers with many first timers in attendance.

Ironbabes 8/19/2007

This was the first year for this race out at Deuscen Park and Jana Landry and her crew at Tri on the Run did a great job with this women's only event.  KTC was well represented with both racers and volunteers.  We had a great time and are looking forward to next years race.

Jack's Generic

Check out how great KTC women look at this unique race.  Awards, T's etc. were very basic with a bar code and "award", "t-shirt" etc. written on it.  If you are looking for a fun race weekend check out this race for next year!

Kiwanis Kids Triathlon 9/15/2007

What a great race!  There is nothing like watching kids do what you love to do, it really helps you stay motivated and reminds you how much fun racing can be.  We had a great turn out of KTC kids at this race with over 20 kids racing.  Thanks again to everyone for coming out to help out with the transition area or just cheering on kids.

Halfmax National Qualifier 9/16/2007

Two club members attended this race: Jama Henderson and Jim Sizer.  In order to compete in this triathlon, both athletes were invited based on their finishes at Lonestar Triathlon back in March.  Both racers faced a very challenging course (hills and wind) as well as the top athletes all hoping to qualify for the Worlds in Holland next year.  Jama finished 10th in her age group and Jim managed to finish 4th, qualifying for the Worlds!  Way to go Jim.

Cinco Ranch 9/30/2007

Well, it was great to be back racing with everyone!   What a great day for a triathlon and what a great representation by KTC (27 members).  The temps were good on Sunday and even the little rain showers did not hinder our racers, we had a killer race!

Julie Mosier-Crosno was first overall female and 8th in the invitational race!

We also had many other great performances with these club members coming in the top 10 of their age group.

Cindi Vargas, Rusty Brice, Tina Thibodeaux, Diane Jensen, Jennifer Browning, Jacque and Catherine Nolen, Ron Kopplin, Melanie Kerschbaum, Jeff Pack, Leah Heaney, Lesley Bachman, Jim Lane, Pat Maly, Dan Seluk, Gloria Manoney & Doug McMillian

Congrats also to Charles Bourgerous who completed his first triathlon and Rusty Brice who has just returned to triathlons after a 10 year taper!

KTC gained a total of 51.5 points for SMW region club championships.  We are currently in 4th place out of 8 teams.  I don't know if we will be able to catch 3rd, but please continue to e-mail me when you race, every point counts!

Getting started

So you want to get in shape but you don’t know where to start.  You look in the mirror and say, “I can do this, but how?” Well, you are right:  you can do this. Once you get the desire and passion to change your body, you are on the road to success.  What is left is the know-how, and that is where a personal trainer comes in.  We take you from start to finish, and have fun and work hard along the way.  It is a journey, and with the right education and motivation you can do anything that you put your mind to. Remember, even if you are on the road to success, you can get run over if you are standing still.

Monthly success story:  Brian Bennett

I started working out with Jason nearly a year ago in preparation to compete in Spain at the 2006 World Karate Championships. I weighed nearly 220 lbs, but I knew I needed to lose weight to compete. At the time my goal was to fight in the +190 lb bracket (I weighed in officially at 202 lbs). Jason helped me get to my goal weight in the short amount of time that I gave him. I ended up 16th overall in the world in my weight bracket, but I found that I did not balance out in height and weight compared to the other fighters. Upon my return, Jason and I worked on a diet and exercise program to get me down to the –187lbs weight bracket (I officially weighed in at 187 lbs) for US trials. I have improved my cardio and muscle mass thanks to the program that Jason set up for me. I qualified this year for the U.S. Martial Arts Team for 2 divisions that were out of my reach last year. I am currently training for the 2007 World Karate Championships in Karlsruhe, Germany. I believe I truly have a chance to bring home the Gold in fighting and Shotokan. Thanks!

Nutrition tip:  The food diary

Some of y'all know my feelings about the food diary.  This is a tool that can make or break your success.  Just journaling everything you eat will help you see your strengths and weaknesses.  You can do it on regular paper or get a fancy journal, but either way, you must record everything.  Try also recording the time of day, along with water intake.  If you are really brave, you can have a friend or trainer look it over.

Exercise tip

24% of adult Americans are totally sedentary.  Regular exercise is a key component to your health.  The ACSM recommends 30 minutes or more of moderate intensity activity over the course of most days (5) of the week.  Are you getting this?  This may be the reason your weight loss has hit a stopping point.  Start off slowly.  Walking, either on land or in the pool, is great way to start.  If you cannot do 30 minutes, start with 10 or 15.  Do what you can, and you will see how great you feel.

Workout Anniversary

Homebody Fitness would like to start recognizing the individuals who have stuck with the training program for 1-2 or in some cases 6+ years.  For the month of June, we congratulate Venna P. for 1 year of training.  Keep it up!
