2007 SECOND QUARTER

(April - June)

The old saying, “April showers bring May flowers,” was somewhat true this year.  The month of May was definitely plagued with rain that affected everyone’s training and even cancelled a major triathlon weekend in Austin with the Capital of Texas Triathlon being cancelled.

Kingwood Triathlon Club definitely made its presence known in nearby races such as: Battle of San Jacinto (4/22/2007), CB&I (5/5/2007), Silverlake (5/20/2007), and Tejas (6/10/2007).  Below is a brief summary of these races and how we did.

 Battle of San Jacinto

Turns out this triathlon was more of a battle of Iron Guts rather than iron will.  With high winds at the start, this race had some killer waves for the swimmers to get through.  Then on the bike, racers had to experience high winds that made the journey to the monument even more adventurous than some would have liked.  However, the seven brave KTC members all finished the race and came away with some great hardware and lots of points for the SMW club race (31.5 points)!

Race results:

  • Katie Loken 2nd age group
  • Julie Mosier-Crosno 1st age group 2nd female overall!
  • Cindi Vargas 3rd age group
  • Jacqueline O'Brien-Nolen 1st age group
  • Dafna Lotan 1st age group
  • Andrew Roden 9th age group
  • Ron Kopplin 2nd age group

 CB&I

KTC made its presence known in the Woodlands today, with 18 club members racing!  What a great day for a race, with overcast skies and only a little sprinkling of rain (much better than last year’s torrential downpours!)  Club members did great and had a lot of fun during and after the race. We collected a total of 22 points for the club competitionJennifer Browning, Ron Kopplin and Jim Lane all walked away with hardware and Christine Elkan and Jesse Keller completed their first triathlons EVER with smiles on their faces  (I am sure we will see them out there again!)

 Silverlake

We had a total of 17 racers and earned a total of 21.5 points!  Our top finishers (top 10 in their age group) consisted of:

  • Leah Heaney (30-34) 7th

  • Barb Campbell (35-39) 4th

·         Jim Lane (55-59) 1st!

  • Jeff Pack (clysdale) 3rd

 Tejas

Today was a great race.  Although the temps were a little warm today, the clouds managed to stay out and keep the sun away for the race at Tejas.  We had 24 racers come out and make an excellent showing in their new club uniforms, which I might say makes it much easier to spot KTC members as they race by   We earned 32 points toward the SMW region club race and had 8 people take home hardware! Here are the KTC members who placed top 6 in their age group:

  • Julie Mosier-Crosno 1ST OVERALL FEMALE  (with a bike pace at 25mph and run pace at 6:13!)
  • Barb Campbell 5th
  • Jama Henderson 5th
  • Jackie O'Brien-Nolen 4th
  • Her daughter (Katheryn) got 1st in her age (14 and under) and it was her 1st Triathlon!
  • Melanie Kerschbaum 4th
  • Jim Lane 4th
  • Ron Kopplin 4th
  • Scott James 5th

On the social side of things:

KTC members enjoyed pre-race pasta dinners at Zios, Kingwood Athletic Club (where we also did a pool party for the kids before dinner), and Original Pasta Company.  Where there is food we can always have some fun!

A few club members also went to an Astros Game April 28th, where they were able to see the Astros break their loosing streak and win a game against the Milwakee Brewers.  We all had a lot of fun eating peanuts and cracker jacks, even in the nosebleed section!

On April 29th, we had our first club guest lecture with Tim Neckar and Jennifer Klein.  Goodies from our sponsors (Lukes Locker and Kingwood Athletic Club) were given out to random club members.

On June 24th, our second guest lecture with Jason Garrett and Katie White took place at Kingwood College and we had another great turnout.  Goodies from Bike Lane, Luke’s Locker and KTC were drawn and club members learned a lot about training and periodization.

Unfortunately, on June 16th, the KTC family picnic was rained out!  This event will be rescheduled!  We look forward to having lots of KTC members come out and have fun with their families without having to get up at 5:00am!

Upcoming Events:

KTC will be racing at Jeff and Brede’s Triathlon (7/15), Summertime Blues Triathlon (9/2) and Cinco Ranch (9/30).  There are many other races these months that KTC members will be attending, such as: T-Gator #3 in Lake Charles and Small Texan in Boerne.

Guest lectures include: Mark Hovenkamp (resistance training on 7/22), Mark Crosno (cycling) and Amy Bragg (nutrition on 8/19), and Tina Thibodeaux & Kim Kelley (swimming) and Marita Gardner (yoga on 9/9).

Possible social events may include: a family picnic and bowling?  Details still pending.

A few words from Tina Thibodeaux, club president

As of the publication of this newsletter (July 1st), Kingwood Triathlon Club now consists of 88 members and we have a total of 178 points for the South Midwest Region.  Our new club uniforms look great and KTC members stand out at the races.

Every time I attend a race, I can’t believe how far the club has come in just a little over a year!  We have grown by leaps and bounds and our club members are getting faster and setting personal records with the help of group training and advice from fellow club members.

Keep up the great work!  I look forward to finally racing with the club at Cinco Ranch.

Getting started

So you want to get in shape but you don’t know where to start.  You look in the mirror and say, “I can do this, but how?” Well, you are right:  you can do this. Once you get the desire and passion to change your body, you are on the road to success.  What is left is the know-how, and that is where a personal trainer comes in.  We take you from start to finish, and have fun and work hard along the way.  It is a journey, and with the right education and motivation you can do anything that you put your mind to. Remember, even if you are on the road to success, you can get run over if you are standing still.

Monthly success story:  Brian Bennett

I started working out with Jason nearly a year ago in preparation to compete in Spain at the 2006 World Karate Championships. I weighed nearly 220 lbs, but I knew I needed to lose weight to compete. At the time my goal was to fight in the +190 lb bracket (I weighed in officially at 202 lbs). Jason helped me get to my goal weight in the short amount of time that I gave him. I ended up 16th overall in the world in my weight bracket, but I found that I did not balance out in height and weight compared to the other fighters. Upon my return, Jason and I worked on a diet and exercise program to get me down to the –187lbs weight bracket (I officially weighed in at 187 lbs) for US trials. I have improved my cardio and muscle mass thanks to the program that Jason set up for me. I qualified this year for the U.S. Martial Arts Team for 2 divisions that were out of my reach last year. I am currently training for the 2007 World Karate Championships in Karlsruhe, Germany. I believe I truly have a chance to bring home the Gold in fighting and Shotokan. Thanks!

Nutrition tip:  The food diary

Some of y'all know my feelings about the food diary.  This is a tool that can make or break your success.  Just journaling everything you eat will help you see your strengths and weaknesses.  You can do it on regular paper or get a fancy journal, but either way, you must record everything.  Try also recording the time of day, along with water intake.  If you are really brave, you can have a friend or trainer look it over.

Exercise tip

24% of adult Americans are totally sedentary.  Regular exercise is a key component to your health.  The ACSM recommends 30 minutes or more of moderate intensity activity over the course of most days (5) of the week.  Are you getting this?  This may be the reason your weight loss has hit a stopping point.  Start off slowly.  Walking, either on land or in the pool, is great way to start.  If you cannot do 30 minutes, start with 10 or 15.  Do what you can, and you will see how great you feel.

Workout Anniversary

Homebody Fitness would like to start recognizing the individuals who have stuck with the training program for 1-2 or in some cases 6+ years.  For the month of June, we congratulate Venna P. for 1 year of training.  Keep it up!
